Bhopal: The Central Bureau of Investigation has detailed the final hours of 34-year-old Twisha Sharma in a chargesheet filed in connection with her death at her Bhopal home on May 12. The agency has accused her husband, Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, of subjecting her to alleged mental cruelty and abetting suicide. The chargesheet reportedly runs to 600 pages.
According to the CBI's reconstruction, Twisha's final evening involved a series of emotional phone calls, messages and CCTV-recorded movements inside the house. Investigators say she contacted relatives while distressed and indicated that she wanted to leave Bhopal and return to her family.
The agency has also cited a WhatsApp message sent by Twisha to her sister-in-law shortly before she went towards the terrace. Shortly afterwards, CCTV footage allegedly showed her moving upstairs alone. She then spoke to her father and mother, with investigators stating that she appeared extremely distressed during the conversations.
Later that night, her family members reportedly tried to contact her after becoming concerned. CCTV footage cited by the CBI allegedly shows Giribala and Samarth subsequently moving towards the terrace. Twisha was later brought downstairs and taken to AIIMS Bhopal, where she was declared dead.
The CBI's investigation goes beyond the events of that night. According to the chargesheet, investigators examined WhatsApp conversations, call records, CCTV footage, statements from relatives and other witnesses, medical records and psychological assessments while examining the circumstances surrounding her death.
The agency alleges that Twisha's marital relationship had deteriorated considerably in the months before her death. It has alleged repeated emotional and psychological harassment by her husband and claims that her mother-in-law supported or encouraged the alleged conduct.
The investigation also focuses on disputes surrounding Twisha's pregnancy and her personal finances. The CBI alleges that she faced pressure concerning investments worth around ₹20 lakh and that financial disagreements added to tensions within the marriage.
Twisha had reportedly decided to leave Bhopal on the day of her death and had arranged a train ticket to return to her family. She also attended a counselling session with Samarth earlier that day, but according to the chargesheet, the relationship remained strained afterwards.
Medical evidence has also formed an important part of the investigation. A second post-mortem conducted by an AIIMS Delhi medical board concluded that the cause of death was asphyxia due to ante-mortem hanging and classified the manner of death as suicidal. The board reportedly found no significant injury indicating physical assault before death.
The CBI's case is therefore centred on alleged sustained mental cruelty and abetment of suicide rather than a claim that Twisha was physically killed. The agency has invoked Sections 85, 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh.
The investigation, however, has not completely concluded. The CBI is reportedly awaiting forensic examination of digital devices and CCTV material, along with other evidence that could provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding Twisha's death.
It is important to note that the allegations contained in a chargesheet are yet to be tested in court, and the accused remain entitled to due process and the presumption of innocence.
