PUNE: Travellers heading between Pune and the Konkan region have received a major relief with the Tamhini Ghat route reopening after remaining closed due to damage caused by heavy monsoon rainfall.
The route connecting Pune and Raigad districts was affected by landslides during the intense rainfall in July. A small bridge was also washed away, forcing authorities to suspend traffic completely as a safety precaution. Following the completion of necessary repair work, traffic has now been permitted to resume on the route.
The reopening, however, comes with restrictions. At present, two-wheelers, cars, light motor vehicles and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses are allowed to use the ghat. Heavy vehicles will continue to be prohibited as road widening and strengthening work is still underway.
Motorists travelling through Tamhini Ghat will also have to follow a maximum speed limit of 20 kmph. The restriction has been introduced as a safety measure, considering the condition of the road and the ongoing work in the area.
The reopening is expected to bring relief to commuters and tourists who regularly use the Pune-Konkan route. Tamhini Ghat is also a major monsoon attraction, drawing visitors because of its greenery, waterfalls and scenic surroundings.
The prolonged closure had also affected businesses operating around the tourist route. Small shops, eateries and other local establishments that depend on tourist movement were impacted while traffic remained suspended. With the route now open, local businesses are expected to see some relief.
At the same time, authorities are focusing on road safety. Warning and cautionary signboards are being installed at dangerous and accident-prone stretches to alert motorists. Special police deployment is also planned at various points during the night as an additional safety measure.
Travellers are therefore advised to follow the prescribed speed limit and traffic instructions strictly. The reopening of Tamhini Ghat provides a much-needed boost to Pune-Konkan connectivity, but motorists should remain cautious while passing through the ghat, particularly during rainfall and on stretches where repair and strengthening work is still underway.
