Washington: A 16-year-old accused of killing three children and a teacher at an elementary school in Oregon, United States, reportedly received the shotgun used in the attack as a birthday gift from his mother.
According to a CBS News report citing sources, the teenager's mother, Shauntai Nickerson, legally purchased a Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun in August 2026 and later gifted it to her son, Griffin J. John II, for recreational use.
The reported circumstances surrounding the firearm have raised questions about how the teenager obtained access to the weapon.
Three Children and Teacher Killed in Classroom
The shooting reportedly occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, where the teenager had previously studied.
According to the account, the gunman initially fired at a passing pickup truck, prompting the driver to contact emergency services.
Police said the teenager subsequently entered the school by shooting through locked glass entrance doors.
He allegedly entered a classroom near the entrance and opened fire, killing three children aged 5, 8 and 11, along with 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert.
The youngest victim was identified as five-year-old Rhoam Summer.
A seven-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher were also injured. Police said nine people, including five children and four adults, were inside the classroom when the shooting occurred.
Parent Reportedly Shot Gunman During Attack
The teenager was reportedly shot and killed by 36-year-old Kaylub Giamanco, a Bend resident whose two daughters attended the school.
According to the account, Giamanco witnessed the initial shooting near the pickup truck and followed the gunman into the school.
He reportedly intervened while a teacher was struggling with the teenager over the firearm and fatally shot him.
Victim's Family Seeks Investigation
Authorities are continuing to investigate the motive behind the shooting.
Meanwhile, the parents of one of the children killed have reportedly hired attorneys to examine the school's security procedures and how the teenager obtained the weapon.
The investigation is expected to focus on firearm access, school security arrangements and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
