Pune: A deadly road accident in Pune has once again highlighted the dangers posed by pothole-ridden roads during the monsoon. An 11-year-old boy lost his life on Monday evening after the motorcycle he was travelling on with his family reportedly lost balance near Balewadi-Mhalunge, causing him to fall under a passing truck.
The accident occurred at around 7 pm and was captured on CCTV. Preliminary information indicates that the boy was travelling with his father and sister on their way to a tuition class when the motorcycle encountered a pothole and skidded.
The child fell onto the road during the incident and came under the wheels of a truck travelling behind them. He died at the spot. The accident soon drew a crowd to the location.
The incident has triggered fresh concern over the condition of roads in Pune, particularly during the monsoon when potholes can become difficult to spot and pose a serious risk to two-wheeler riders.
The tragedy comes amid efforts by civic authorities to address potholes ahead of the Ganesh festival. Municipal bodies have been asked to identify and repair damaged stretches, including major roads, internal roads and routes expected to witness heavy movement during the festival.
The accident has once again raised questions over whether pothole repairs are being carried out quickly and effectively enough to prevent such fatal incidents.
