Pune, October 23, 2026: Pune, widely recognised as Maharashtra's educational hub, has recorded just 28,509 registered graduate voters for the Pune Division Graduates’ Constituency election, despite an estimated graduate population exceeding 10 lakh.

According to figures released by the district administration, voter enrolment remains low across the city's Assembly segments, raising concerns about electoral participation, awareness and the effectiveness of political parties' registration campaigns.

Parvati Leads, Pune Cantonment Records Lowest Enrolment

Parvati recorded the highest number of registered graduate voters at 6,100, followed by Khadakwasla with 5,337.

Kothrud registered 4,224 voters, while Vadgaon Sheri recorded 3,290. Shivajinagar, despite its concentration of colleges and educational institutions, recorded only 2,278 registrations.

Pune Cantonment reported the lowest enrolment among the segments cited, with just 1,112 registered voters.

The figures have raised questions about why relatively few eligible graduates have enrolled in a city known for its large student and professional population.

BJP Blames Early Election Schedule; Congress Questions Party Machinery

BJP State General Secretary Rajesh Pandey attributed the low registration numbers to the early announcement of the election schedule.

According to Pandey, political parties had expected the elections in November, but the October schedule reduced the time available for voter enrolment.

A senior Congress leader, speaking anonymously, disputed this explanation and attributed the poor response to organisational shortcomings and inadequate voter engagement.

The differing explanations have brought political parties' voter registration efforts under scrutiny.

Separate Registration Mandatory for Graduate Voters

Unlike Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, the Graduates’ Constituency requires eligible voters to complete a separate registration process.

Holding a regular voter ID does not automatically qualify a graduate to vote in the Legislative Council's Graduates’ Constituency.

The Pune Division Graduates’ Constituency covers Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur districts.

Polling was scheduled for Friday, October 23, 2026.

The low enrolment figures have highlighted the need for greater awareness of the separate registration process and more effective outreach to eligible graduate voters.
