Pune Sees 44.5% Rain Deficit in August, But Full Dams Bring Relief

 Pune: Pune has witnessed a relatively dry August, with the city recording only 80.8 mm of rainfall against the normal 145.5 mm. This amounts to a 44.5% deficit for the month. Despite the shortfall, there is some relief on the water front as the major reservoirs supplying the city continue to hold water close to their full capacity.

The comfortable dam storage is largely the result of the exceptionally heavy rainfall received in July. Pune recorded 508.9 mm of rain in July, compared with the monthly average of 190 mm. The surplus rainfall led to a strong inflow into the reservoirs and helped build a substantial water cushion before August turned comparatively dry.

The monsoon picture becomes more positive when the season is considered as a whole. Between June and August, Pune has received 653.7 mm of rainfall, while the normal rainfall for the same period is around 488.4 mm. This means the city is still 33.8% above its cumulative seasonal average.

The monthly figures, however, show a sharp contrast. June recorded only 64 mm of rain against a normal 152.9 mm, while July brought exceptionally heavy rainfall. August has once again remained below average, highlighting the uneven distribution of rainfall this monsoon.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Pune is not currently facing any major rainfall alert. The city may continue to see cloudy weather and occasional light showers over the coming days, but widespread heavy rainfall is not expected at present.

With September still remaining in the monsoon season, the coming weeks will be important. While the August deficit may not significantly affect Pune’s water availability due to the healthy reservoir levels, rainfall in September will determine the final picture of this year’s monsoon.
