New Delhi, July 18, 2026: Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Saturday announced an indefinite hunger strike after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by the Delhi Police following a deterioration in his health.
Wangchuk, who had been observing an indefinite fast, was admitted to the hospital on the 21st day of his protest. According to Delhi Police, the decision was taken on medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Hospital authorities stated that Wangchuk requires continuous medical monitoring due to his health condition.
Following Wangchuk's hospitalisation, Dipke announced on social media platform X that he was beginning an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the activist.
Dipke also alleged that he was assaulted and detained by Delhi Police during the operation. He claimed he was prevented from entering the protest site at Jantar Mantar and appealed for a peaceful nationwide strike against the police action. These allegations have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have urged protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to vacate the protest site at the earliest. Security has been tightened in the area, with heavy police deployment following Wangchuk's hospitalisation.
The latest developments come just two days before Wangchuk and his supporters were scheduled to march to Parliament on July 20 as part of their ongoing protest.
The situation remains under close watch as authorities continue to monitor Wangchuk's health and maintain security at the protest site.
