New Delhi: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, who was detained by Delhi Police ahead of a proposed protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, has been informed about the death of his 85-year-old grandmother in Maharashtra's Hingoli district.

According to police sources quoted by ANI, Dipke has been given the option of returning to Maharashtra to attend her last rites or remaining in Delhi in connection with the planned protest.

Grandmother Passes Away in Hingoli

Dipke's paternal grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke (85), passed away at her residence in Santuk Pimpri village of Hingoli district at approximately 11:30 am on Saturday, following a prolonged illness.

Family sources told PTI that she had been unwell for nearly a month and had previously undergone treatment at a hospital in Hingoli.

Her last rites are scheduled to take place at 10 am on Sunday.

Family Unable to Contact Dipke

According to Dipke's cousin, family members had been unable to establish contact with him following his detention in Delhi.

His parents were informed about the death and were reportedly travelling to their native village.

Family members said Dipke had met his grandmother on August 15 during the launch of his 'School Thik Karo' campaign in Hingoli district.

He had visited her once more after that but had reportedly been unable to meet her during the last 20 to 25 days.

Delhi Police Offers Option to Return Home

Delhi Police sources, quoted by ANI, said Dipke had been informed of his grandmother's death and could decide whether to return home for the funeral.

Police indicated that he could travel back to Maharashtra for the last rites.

However, it was not immediately clear whether Dipke had decided to return or remain in Delhi.

Detained Ahead of Jantar Mantar Protest

Dipke was detained on Saturday along with CJP co-convenor Saurav Das and party leader Ashutosh Ranka after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai.

The leaders had travelled to the national capital for the proposed 'Jantar Mantar 2.0' protest, organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Delhi Police had denied permission for the demonstration, citing public safety, traffic management and law-and-order concerns.

The CJP has maintained that it intends to continue its campaign concerning electoral transparency and accountability.

The development comes as Dipke faces a personal bereavement while remaining in police detention. His decision regarding attending his grandmother's funeral was awaited.
