Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the Centre over the police action against students protesting under the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) banner, alleging that the government had failed India's youth. His remarks came in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he condemned the handling of the protest and demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the post, Gandhi accused the Prime Minister of being "the most youth-hostile Prime Minister in India's history" and criticised him for not seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan despite repeated controversies surrounding examination paper leaks.
He alleged that 152 paper leaks had affected nearly 7.5 crore students, claiming that while those responsible for the leaks remained free, students raising legitimate concerns were "dragged around" and beaten by police during the protest.
Referring to the police action, Gandhi said students who demanded accountability were met with batons and detention instead of answers. He argued that the government should have listened to their concerns rather than resorting to force.
"The government isn't just failing the youth—it's pouncing on them," Gandhi wrote, adding that the Prime Minister should apologise to students for the crackdown.
The X post came a day after a large-scale protest near Parliament, where thousands of students and supporters gathered to demand accountability over the alleged NEET paper leak issue and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The demonstration turned tense after clashes broke out between protesters and police, leading to injuries and detentions.
The Centre has maintained that strict action is being taken against those responsible for examination irregularities, while the opposition continues to accuse the government of failing to protect the interests of students.
As the controversy continues to escalate, the issue is expected to remain at the centre of political debate both inside and outside Parliament.
