Pune, October 31, 2026: A 34-year-old woman who had returned to India from London without informing her family was found dead inside a rented apartment at the Lodha Belmondo residential complex in Gahunje, Pimpri-Chinchwad.
The deceased has been identified as Mugdha Avinash Deshmukh, a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Her family believed she was still studying in London until suspicious online transactions and a sudden loss of contact prompted them to approach the police.
According to investigators, there were no visible injury marks on her body. The exact cause of death remains unknown.
Returned From London Without Informing Family
Mugdha had travelled to the United Kingdom in July 2025 to pursue an MBA. While staying in London, she reportedly worked part-time and maintained regular contact with her family through calls and messages.
However, police said she returned to India in August 2026 without informing her parents and began living alone in a rented apartment in Gahunje.
Investigators later discovered that she had rented the apartment in April but moved in only after returning from the UK.
Food Delivery Transactions Raise Family's Suspicion
The family became worried after losing contact with Mugdha on October 24. Her mobile phone was subsequently switched off.
Her father, Avinash Deshmukh, approached the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police after repeated attempts to reach her failed.
The family also contacted one of Mugdha's friends in London, who reportedly last communicated with her through messages on October 22.
When the friend contacted London police, the family learned that Mugdha had left the UK around the end of August.
Her father subsequently examined her bank statements and noticed multiple transactions involving food delivery and online service platforms between October 8 and October 25.
One transaction appeared to be connected to the Osmanpura area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, raising suspicion that Mugdha might have returned to India.
The family sought assistance from Indian authorities and the Indian High Commission while also approaching the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Crime Branch.
Police Trace Woman to Lodha Belmondo Apartment
During the investigation, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar police traced Mugdha's whereabouts to the Lodha Belmondo residential complex in Gahunje and informed Pimpri-Chinchwad police.
A team from Shirgaon Police Station reached the apartment and entered with the assistance of a keymaker.
Inside, officers discovered Mugdha's body.
Senior Police Inspector Devendra Chavan of Shirgaon Police Station confirmed that no visible injury marks were found on the body.
Police have preserved visceral samples for forensic examination to determine the cause of death.
Mystery Surrounds Woman's Death
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding Mugdha's return to India, her decision not to inform her family and the events leading up to her death.
However, police have not established whether her death resulted from natural causes, an accident or other circumstances.
Further clarity is expected after the post-mortem and forensic examination reports are available.
The case has raised several unanswered questions, particularly why Mugdha chose to keep her return from London a secret while continuing to communicate with her family.
