Pune Water Cut Update: PMC Puts 20% Water Reduction on Hold; Existing 10% Thursday Cut to Continue
Pune residents will not face an immediate increase in water cuts, as Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has directed the PMC to continue the existing 10% Thursday reduction. The Irrigation Department has proposed increasing the cut to 20% after reducing Pune's annual water allocation from 16 TMC to 11.33 TMC. A final decision will be taken after the next canal committee meeting.

Pune, October 28, 2026: Pune residents have received temporary relief as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided not to increase water cuts immediately. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has directed the civic administration to maintain the existing 10% water reduction until the proposed 20% cut is discussed at the next canal committee meeting.
The decision comes after the Irrigation Department proposed stricter water restrictions for the 2026–27 water year, citing a reduction in Pune's approved water allocation.
No Additional Water Cuts for Pune Residents
Under the current arrangement, Pune continues to face a 10% reduction in water supply every Thursday.
Mayor Nagpure has clarified that there will be no immediate change in the frequency or extent of the existing restrictions.
The proposed increase to a 20% cut was expected to be discussed at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 28. However, the meeting has been postponed.
The mayor has maintained that any decision regarding additional water restrictions must be taken only after discussions at the canal committee.
Pune's Water Allocation Reduced by 4.67 TMC
The proposed restrictions follow a significant difference between Pune's water demand and the quantity approved by the Irrigation Department.
For the 2026–27 water year, the PMC requested 21 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water. However, the department approved only 11.33 TMC.
Last year, Pune received an allocation of 16 TMC, meaning the latest approved quantity is 4.67 TMC lower.
The reduced allocation has prompted concerns about managing the city's drinking water requirements over the coming months.
Khadakwasla Dam System Holds 24 TMC
According to the information provided, the Khadakwasla dam system currently has approximately 24 TMC of water in storage.
The state government has instructed authorities to prioritise drinking water requirements when managing dam reserves.
In response, the Irrigation Department has proposed stricter controls on water consumption to conserve available supplies.
However, Mayor Nagpure has opposed implementing additional restrictions before the canal committee reviews the proposal.
When Will the 20% Water Cut Be Decided?
The final decision on increasing Pune's water cut from 10% to 20% remains pending.
The next canal committee meeting is expected to examine the city's approved water quota, available dam storage and drinking water requirements before deciding whether additional restrictions are necessary.
A revised meeting date has not yet been announced.
For now, Pune residents will continue under the existing Thursday water-cut arrangement, with no additional restrictions announced.
