Pune IT Engineer Dies by Suicide
A 33-year-old IT engineer in Pune, Maharashtra, allegedly died by suicide on September 29 after reportedly facing harassment over dowry and property demands from her in-laws.
The woman was identified as Trishna Rahul Sakpal. According to a complaint filed by her father, Balkrishna Nikam, she married Rahul Sakpal in 2018 and had allegedly faced pressure from her marital family since the marriage.
Family Alleges Salary and Property Demands
According to the complaint, Trishna's in-laws allegedly pressured her to hand over her entire salary, transfer the flat owned by her parental family into her mother-in-law's name, and purchase a flat worth ₹1 crore for her father-in-law.
Her father also alleged that she experienced physical abuse. Distressed by the alleged harassment, Trishna reportedly returned to her parents' home in 2021.
Her husband later filed for divorce, reportedly to remarry. The divorce case is still pending in court, according to the complaint.
Suicide Note Names Five Family Members
Police reportedly recovered a suicide note in which Trishna held her husband, Rahul Sakpal; mother-in-law, Vaishali; father-in-law, Sanjay; sister-in-law, Shaili; and paternal grandmother-in-law, Shakuntala Salunke, responsible for her death.
Based on the complaint filed by her father, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the five accused. The allegations are subject to investigation.
Similar Dowry Harassment Case Reported in Pune
The incident comes after another case involving a young IT professional in Pune was reported last month.
Vaishnavi Pravin Jarande, 23, allegedly died by suicide around four months after marrying Omkar Sanjay Ghisare. Her family accused her husband and in-laws of demanding an additional ₹5 lakh to purchase a car and subjecting her to alleged mental and physical harassment.
According to the complaint, Vaishnavi's family spent approximately ₹45 lakh on the wedding and gave 10 tolas of gold, equivalent to around 116 grams. Despite this, they alleged that her husband and in-laws continued to demand money for a car.
Family Alleges Harassment Before Her Death
The complaint stated that Vaishnavi called her mother on the night of September 24 and spoke about the alleged harassment she was facing at her marital home.
Later that night, at around 11:30 pm, her husband also contacted her family by phone. When relatives were subsequently unable to reach Vaishnavi, her parents travelled to Pune, where they were informed that she had died at her residence.
A case was registered against her husband and his parents in connection with the allegations.
Both cases have brought renewed attention to allegations of dowry-related harassment faced by women in marital relationships.
