Pune Techie Dies by Suicide Four Months After Marriage; Husband, In-Laws Booked Over Alleged Dowry Harassment
A 24-year-old IT engineer in Pune died by suicide four months after her marriage. Her family has alleged that she faced mental and physical harassment over dowry demands, including an alleged demand for ₹5 lakh to purchase a car. Police have registered a case against her husband and in-laws under relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and for alleged abetment of suicide.
Pune: A 24-year-old IT engineer died by suicide at her residence in Pune’s Wadachiwadi area on Thursday night, four months after her marriage. Her family has alleged that she was subjected to repeated mental and physical harassment over dowry demands.
The deceased has been identified as Vaishnavi Omkar Gisre. According to her father, Pravin Raghunath Jarande, the family spent around ₹45 lakh on the wedding and gave approximately 116.64 grams of gold as gifts.
Vaishnavi married Omkar Sanjay Gisre, 28, on May 9 this year. According to the complaint filed by her father, the family alleges that after the marriage, Vaishnavi was repeatedly asked to bring ₹5 lakh from her parents to help purchase a four-wheeler.
Family Alleges Harassment Over Dowry
According to the complaint, Vaishnavi's family has alleged that she faced continued mental and physical harassment over the alleged demand.
Police said Vaishnavi died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in a residential society in Wadachiwadi.
Following her father's complaint, police registered a case against her husband, Omkar Sanjay Gisre, father-in-law Sanjay Mahadev Gisre, 49, and mother-in-law Rupali Sanjay Gisre, 42.
The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and for alleged abetment of suicide.
Police are now investigating the allegations, including the circumstances surrounding Vaishnavi's death and the family's claims regarding the alleged dowry demand and harassment.
