Pune Police Book 210 Youths in Anti-Drug Crackdown, Push Rehabilitation Through De-Addiction Centres

Instead of focusing solely on punishment, authorities are encouraging rehabilitation by giving offenders the option of attending de-addiction centres through court orders. Pune : The Pune City Police have intensified their campaign against drug abuse, registering cases against 210 youngsters over the past month for allegedly possessing and consuming narcotic substances, including marijuana and mephedrone.
According to police officials, the accused were found with small quantities of drugs meant for personal consumption and not for commercial distribution. While legal action has been initiated against them, the focus remains on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said chargesheets have been filed in court, where the accused are being given an opportunity to choose between imprisonment and treatment at a de-addiction centre. Many of the youths have opted for rehabilitation programmes aimed at helping them overcome substance addiction and rebuild their lives.
In one recent case, a young man arrested by Nanded City Police in June admitted to consuming drugs during court proceedings and was subsequently directed to undergo treatment at a de-addiction centre instead of serving a jail sentence.
Officials said the initiative is designed not only to help young drug users recover but also to gather intelligence on the illegal narcotics network. During counselling sessions and investigations, police are collecting information about suppliers and peddlers to strengthen action against those involved in the drug trade.
The Pune Police have expressed hope that more young offenders will voluntarily choose rehabilitation, allowing them to recover while supporting efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks across the city.
