Pune: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences of five food establishments across the Pune division after inspections revealed serious violations of hygiene and food safety regulations.
The action follows a series of inspections conducted under the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011. Officials found that the establishments had failed to comply with mandatory sanitary and hygiene requirements outlined under Schedule 4, Part II of the regulations.
The affected businesses are located in Kurundwad (Kolhapur district), Shivare village in Pune district's Bhor taluka, and Warje in Pune city. According to the FDA, the establishments were found operating in conditions that did not meet the minimum cleanliness and food safety standards required under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
In an official statement, the FDA said the immediate suspension of licences was necessary to safeguard public health and ensure that food served to consumers meets prescribed safety norms.
The department also announced that it will continue surprise inspections across Pune and neighbouring districts, focusing on restaurants, tea stalls, snack centres and other food businesses that cater to large numbers of customers every day.
Officials have reminded food business operators that they must maintain strict hygiene practices, including proper sanitation, pest control, safe water usage, waste management and personal cleanliness. The FDA warned that businesses failing to comply with these standards could face stringent action, including suspension or cancellation of their licences.
The latest enforcement drive is part of the state's ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety standards and protect consumers from health risks associated with unhygienic food handling.
