New Delhi: A 62-year-old software consultant has been arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly murdering his wife following a long-running domestic and property dispute.
According to police, the incident took place on July 30 in East Delhi when Kamal Singh and his wife, Komal Singh, were alone at their residence. Their children were away at the time.
Police allege that Kamal attacked his wife inside the house and fled after the incident. When their son returned home later in the evening, he found his mother dead and alerted the authorities.
Investigators found one weapon at the scene, while another was allegedly taken away by the accused. Police subsequently examined CCTV footage and used technical surveillance and electronic evidence to track Kamal's movements.
According to investigators, Kamal initially travelled towards Gorakhpur and later moved towards Mathura in an attempt to mislead the police. After a three-day search, Delhi Police arrested him near Mathura Railway Station.
Police also recovered the scooter allegedly used during his escape and approximately ₹12.75 lakh in cash. Investigators said the accused had allegedly withdrawn around ₹7 lakh from bank accounts and had taken approximately ₹5 lakh in cash from the house.
During questioning, police allege that Kamal said he had taken inspiration from the crime web series The Staircase while planning how to dispose of evidence. Police are investigating his statements and the complete sequence of events.
The investigation has also highlighted long-standing tensions between the couple. Police said the two had been facing marital disputes for around a year, while disagreements over a property in Jagatpuri had reportedly intensified their conflict.
Officials also said Kamal had allegedly developed a close relationship with another woman during a trip to Mumbai, which further contributed to tensions within the marriage.
Police believe the property dispute was a major factor behind the alleged crime. The investigation remains underway, and further details are expected as evidence is examined.
