Delhi Satya Niketan Building Collapse: 1 Dead, 2 Critical After Five-Storey Hostel Collapses
A five-storey residential building housing a hostel collapsed in Delhi's Satya Niketan area on Sunday afternoon, leaving one person dead and two others critically injured, according to AIIMS officials. Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Services, NDRF, Delhi Police and other agencies were deployed as several people were feared trapped under the debris.
Five-Storey Hostel Building Collapses
The building, which reportedly housed a hostel named 'Hostel Daze', collapsed near Nanakpura Gurudwara in the Satya Niketan area. Police said students were staying in the building on rent.
A PCR call regarding the collapse was received at around 1:34 pm, following which emergency teams rushed to the spot and launched rescue and relief operations.
Several vehicles parked around the building were also reportedly damaged in the collapse.
One Dead, Two Critical at AIIMS
AIIMS officials said four people from the building collapse were brought to the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre (JPNATC).
One person was brought dead, while two others were in critical condition. A rescuer who was also taken to the trauma centre was treated and discharged.
The exact number of people who may have been trapped under the debris was initially unclear. Police said rescue teams were working to locate and safely evacuate those still trapped.
Renovation and Basement Excavation Under Investigation
According to sources, investigators suspect that renovation work and basement excavation may have weakened the building's lower supports, potentially contributing to the collapse.
However, the exact cause of the structural failure is yet to be established. Authorities are expected to investigate the construction and renovation work carried out at the property.
Multiple Agencies Join Rescue Operation
At least eight fire tenders were deployed at the site, while teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, MCD, DDMA, CATS and Civil Defence participated in the rescue operation.
The adjacent building was also vacated as a precautionary measure. Local residents were seen assisting emergency personnel in removing debris and helping with the rescue effort.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said all concerned agencies were working in coordination and that every possible effort was being made to rescue those trapped and provide assistance to affected families.
Satya Niketan Witnessed Similar Collapse in 2022
The latest incident has brought back memories of a similar building collapse in Satya Niketan in 2022, when two people were killed and several others were injured.
In that incident, the terrace of a three-storey house undergoing renovation collapsed, trapping six workers. Rescue teams from the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police and NDRF were involved in the operation.
