CJP Alleges Police Excess During ‘Sansad Chalo’ March; Sonam Wangchuk Extends Hunger Strike
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has accused Delhi Police of using excessive force during its "Sansad Chalo" march in the national capital. Several protesters were reportedly injured after police intervened to stop the march. Meanwhile, activist Sonam Wangchuk announced that he would continue his indefinite hunger strike following the police action.
New Delhi: Tensions escalated in the national capital on Monday as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) accused Delhi Police of using excessive force to stop its "Sansad Chalo" march towards Parliament.
Thousands of protesters attempted to march to Parliament but were stopped by police. The operation, which included barricading key routes and dispersing demonstrators, reportedly left several protesters injured. Internet services were also suspended in parts of the New Delhi district as a precautionary measure during the protest.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke apologised to supporters who, according to the organisation, were "brutally beaten" during the police action. He also thanked protesters for participating in what the party described as one of its largest demonstrations.
The CJP further alleged that several students were injured during the march and claimed that Gitanjali J. Angmo, the wife of activist Sonam Wangchuk, was pushed during the police intervention. After police dismantled the protest stage at Jantar Mantar, demonstrators continued their protest through a sit-in near Kerala House.
In the first formal interaction between the Centre and the CJP, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda met with the party's spokespersons, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. According to the CJP, the minister assured them that the government's leadership would hold internal discussions on the organisation's demands.
Meanwhile, Sonam Wangchuk, who is on an indefinite hunger strike, announced that he would continue his fast. He said the police action against protesters had strengthened his resolve to extend the protest.
The demonstrations are centred on demands for greater accountability and reforms in the education system following the alleged irregularities in national competitive examinations. Security remains heightened in the national capital as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
