Nagoya: The Indian women’s hockey team delivered a memorable performance at the Asian Games 2026, defeating hosts China 1-0 in the final to claim the gold medal. The victory marked India’s first Asian Games women’s hockey gold since 1982.

India started the final strongly and took the lead in the opening quarter. Lalremsiami scored the crucial goal in the 10th minute with a powerful strike, giving India an early advantage.

China responded by increasing the pressure on the Indian defence and created opportunities to level the score. However, the Indian players remained organised and defended their narrow lead effectively. India’s goalkeeper and defensive unit made several important interventions as China continued to search for an equaliser.

Despite sustained pressure from the Chinese team in the later stages of the match, India managed to keep its defence intact. The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for India and sparked celebrations among the Indian players and supporters.

The gold medal is significant not only because it ends India’s long wait for the Asian Games women’s hockey title, but also because it gives the team a direct qualification berth for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

India enjoyed a highly successful Day 14 at the Asian Games, with the women’s hockey gold becoming the country’s sixth gold medal of the day. Earlier, India had secured gold in women’s recurve archery, while boxer Lovlina Borgohain also won gold in the women’s 75kg category.

The Indian contingent continued to compete across several disciplines, adding to its medal tally and making Day 14 one of the significant days for India at the 2026 Asian Games.
