Asian Games 2026: India Strikes Gold! Gulveer Singh Leads Athletics Charge with 3 Medals

Aichi-Nagoya: India wrapped up its athletics campaign at the Asian Games 2026 with a five-medal haul on Tuesday, September 29. The biggest highlight was the Indian women's 4x400m relay team's gold medal, while Gulveer Singh added another bronze to his impressive Games campaign.

Gulveer Singh finished third in the men's 5000m final with a timing of 13:32.75. The bronze was his third medal at these Asian Games, after he had earlier won silver in the men's 1,500m and 10,000m events. He became only the second Indian track-and-field athlete after PT Usha to win three medals at a single edition of the Asian Games.

Avinash Sable also competed in the men's 5000m final. He had entered the event after successfully defending his men's 3000m steeplechase title earlier in the Games.

Women's 4x400m Relay Team Wins Gold

India's women's 4x400m relay quartet of Vithya Ramaraj, Kiran, Prachi and Poovamma Machettira produced the day's biggest result by winning gold with a timing of 3:29.69.

It was India's first athletics gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.

India also secured bronze medals in the men's 4x400m relay and the mixed 4x100m relay. The men's quartet of Dharamveer Chaudhary, Manu, Jay Kumar and Vishal Thennarasu finished third, while Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur, Sneha Sathyanarayana and Harita Bhadra won bronze in the mixed relay.

Pooja Singh added another bronze for India in the women's high jump, clearing 1.84 metres.

India's Athletics Campaign

India entered 41 of the 50 athletics medal events at the Games. Before the competition, Avinash Sable, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, Parul Chaudhary and Gulveer Singh were among the athletes expected to lead India's campaign.

With the athletics events now concluded, India's performance included medals across individual and relay events, with Gulveer's three-medal haul standing out as one of the notable individual performances.
