Buenos Aires: Violent clashes erupted across parts of Argentina after the country's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Monday. The unrest was reported in Buenos Aires, where thousands of disappointed fans had gathered to watch the match.

According to reports, clashes broke out near the Obelisk, one of Buenos Aires' most iconic landmarks, as some fans allegedly threw glass bottles and other objects at police officers following Argentina's defeat. In response, security forces used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Media reports said around 15 people were detained during the disturbances. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and additional security personnel have been deployed in affected areas to prevent further violence.

Argentina's hopes of defending their World Cup title ended after Spain defeated the reigning champions 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium. Substitute Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute, securing Spain's second FIFA World Cup title.

Following the defeat, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni expressed pride in his squad despite the heartbreaking result.

"I feel sadness now, but above all, I have eternal gratitude to these boys because getting this far takes a tremendous amount. We're great in victory, and we have to be great in defeat. We gave everything,"

Scaloni said after the match.
