New Delhi: An Air India flight travelling from Phuket, Thailand, to Delhi encountered severe turbulence mid-air, leaving 10 passengers and four cabin crew members injured. Despite the incident, the aircraft landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Flight Experienced Sudden Altitude Drop
The incident occurred on August 4 aboard Flight AI2379, operated by aircraft VT-EXO. According to initial reports, the aircraft suddenly lost around 300 feet of altitude, reportedly due to severe turbulence or a sudden updraft/downdraft during the cruise phase of the flight.
The unexpected movement caused several passengers and crew members to be thrown from their seats, resulting in injuries.
Injuries Reported
Air India confirmed that the turbulence caused minor injuries to several people on board. Initial reports indicate that 10 passengers and four cabin crew members were injured, with one crew member reportedly sustaining more serious injuries.
Medical teams were kept on standby at Delhi Airport before the aircraft's arrival to provide immediate assistance.
Cabin Damaged During Turbulence
Images circulating on social media showed damage to overhead cabin panels, reportedly caused by the intense turbulence. The airline has acknowledged the incident and is conducting an internal assessment.
Safe Landing
Despite the mid-air scare, the flight landed safely in Delhi. Air India stated that the safety of passengers and crew remains its top priority and that all necessary assistance was provided to those affected.
